Indenting

I'm using Word 2000. When I indent a single line and then
hit return, the second line is automatically indented. I'd
like the cursor to go to the margin instead. How can I set
this up?

Thanks.

If you are trying for a first-line indent, you should set a first-line
indent and not an indent, then let the paragraph wrap naturally instead of
pressing Enter at the end of the line. If you're trying for two different
paragraph styles, one indented, one not, then you should use two different
styles. If you apply the indent as direct formatting, however, you can
remove it by pressing Ctrl+Q.

Thanks Suzanne. I know I can use styles, but I'd also like
to get Word working the way it did on my old computer and my
computer at work.

I'm concerned with a second line indent. On my old computer
(and still the case on my work computer) after I indented a
single line and then hit return, the cursor went to the
margin, instead of automatically indenting the third line. I
therefore assume there is a setting for this; otherwise, I
don't see why my other computers would work differently.

Isn't there a way to make Word2000 work like it did on my
old computer and on my work computer?

Thanks.

There is no paragraph format in Word that has a hanging indent on just the
second line (and there never has been, so this is not a question of how Word
worked on a previous computer). But if you have a paragraph with a hanging
indent and press Enter to start a new paragraph, the new paragraph should
start at the left margin. That assumes you are using a true hanging indent,
however. If you are typing one line, pressing Enter, then indenting the
second line, then pressing Enter again, of course, the third line will be
indented because you have changed the indent of the whole paragraph.

To help clarify the situation, please describe exactly how you are creating
these lines and paragraphs: how you are creating the indent, how you are
wrapping to the next line, etc. If you like, you can send a small sample doc
to my email.
