Incredibly slow directory enumeration

Suddenly opening files from any number of apps; different
producers, takes forever to list the contents of the dtata
folder. I cannot figure ......
 
NTFS and indexing have always been on or used. Is there
another service which could account for this. I mean it
takes 5 minutes to display the contents of a folder with
30 files and 1 subdir
