Hi,

I'm running XP circa 1st issue 2002. My current RAM is
128. I wish to increase this to a minimum of 526 and have
the following questions:

a) What increase will the motherboard accommodate.
b) Is there a recommended manuacturer of chips that I
should contact.

Thanks for your help

Visit www.crucial.com and use the RAM configurator.

Without giving us the make/model of the motherboard, we can not guide you to
the correct max capcity of RAM that your motherboard could handle. Most
motherboard that can run XP (Home or Pro) should be able to take up to, at
least, 1 GB of RAM. Most XP users are comfortable with 256MB of RAM and
most game oriented users recommend at least 512MB.

I just added 256 MB to a computer with 128 MB, and I can assure you that the
difference in performance is remarkable. However, for the average user,
there is a diminishing return on your investment on anything past 512 MB. I
would say you could either add 256 or 512, your choice. As previously
mentioned, you need to look at your owner's manual to answer (a) and use the
online RAM configurator at Crucial or Kingston or any other memory supplier
to find the right type of RAM for your system. Actually, your owner's manual
probably has that information as well.

To be certain of your RAM upgrade, it should match the original RAM specs
"precisely". The size of the RAM stick is unimportant, as long as your M/B
supports the size. IE, if your board only accepts 512 meg sticks, don't try
putting a 1 gig stick into it.

Even matching precisely, some (many?) have problems, as Windows XP, and some
M/B's are real finicky about RAM.

Go to www.crucial.com and use their configurator to determine the type of
RAM your M/B requires!

As an aside, whenever I upgrade RAM, I "always" take out the existing and
install matched sets to get to where I wish to be. These are purchased from
the same vendor, on the same day, therefore (hopefully) they will be from
the same manufacturing run. I have found that even that is NOT a guarantee!
