Increasing RAM slows down XP

I have a Dell XPS D333 PII with 512 M Ram. I added a matched stick of ram (256 M 133MHZ) for a total of 768 M and XP slowed to a crawl. The system BIOS reads the RAM fine and so does XP when it finally boots up. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get XP to work properly? I've resorted to just having 512 M for the time being but would like to use the extra stick if possible. Thanks. Jim Breedon
