I'm trying to create a slideshow movie and having poor playback resolution.
I've tried selecting the high quality video options (wmv and avi) available
but they don't achieve the playback I'm looking for. The images I'm using
range from digital images to photos and drawings scanned at 600 dpi. Any
suggestions?

For still images my recommendation is to resize them using a good resizing
program (PSP/PhotoShop/etc) to a multiple of output size. If you are
exporting in a 4:3 ratio (Tools > Options >Advanced) you can just resize
them to 640x480.

Then use a WMV profile that exports in 640x480.

In my opinion, DV AVI and "movie" profiles (using non 4:3 size) are for
those source material that are originally encoded with non-square pixel
encoding such as DV capture from camcorder. Still images are always encoded
using square pixels so these profiles are not appropriate for a still
picture slideshow.

If the original images do not have 4:3 (or 16:9) ratio you will get black
borders. To avoid them you can crop the images so that these are 4:3.
