Increasing file copy speed

I am dismayed at the reduced file copy speed in Vista, as opposed to XP.
This is due to the fact that Vista must first calculate precisely the number
and size of the files to be copied so that it can report the estimated time
and transfer speed for the copy process. If you are trying to copy or
transfer a large block of files, Vista might set there and putter around
calculating the estimated time for several minutes. I would rather invest
that time in actually copying files. I could care less about how accurate
the estimated transfer time readout is.

I may be error about what is really going on, nonetheless, it is a
considerably slower process than XP. I have compared comparable large file
transfers between XP and Vista and found that Vista could take as much as 5x
longer.

Does anyone know how to speed up this process, or circumvent some of the
nonsense that Vista is performing?

If you check the details, the file copy is already in progress while the
calculation is being made. So no, you're not losing any time waiting for
the estimate since the copy started as soon as you dragged and dropped,
clicked OK, etc.

Are there any other reasons possible which might slow down copy ?
Are there any major changes in 'copy' algorithm ?

But as what Azumaniac mentioned... sometimes the copying speed is really
slow to start (before the progress bar starts increasing) but sometimes it
goes on normally.
