I have a Win2k server that has an incorrect Host record.
It only has one DNS server - when trying to boot up, it
seems to try to authenticate by telling the DC (which is
also the DNS server) that it has the same hostname as the
DC. If i do an ipconfig /displaydns I get :

Record Name . . . . . : .
Record Type . . . . . : 1
Time To Live . . . . : 0
Data Length . . . . . : 4
Section . . . . . . . : Answer
A (Host) Record . . . :
172.xx.xx.xx (IP of the DC)

How do I get rid of this record and get it to communicate
normally with the DC?

Thanks,

Jims

Agreed - this does appear to be the problem. Do you have
any idea how to change the entry? Or remove it
altogether?

There are only a couple of places -- I should have thought
to include those:

The machine/domain name in System Control Panel and
the NIC\IP\Advanced\DNS tab for EACH NIC's IP
properties can specify names.

I don't know of any other built-in places except for DCs
(all those domain specific records for sites and services)
or perhaps a "site aware service".

Is there any chance you installed DFS on this server using
the DOMAIN name or DC name?
