Incorrect function

Hi
I am getting 'incorrect function' and then 'you do not have access to the
folderD:\ see your system administrator for access to this folder' when
trying to save a word doucment to a CD. Also is there any online help to do
with administrator access as I have spent hours trying to figure this out and
haven't found much in the way of online help?
 
Hi,

Are you using packet writing software? XP doesn't support direct to CD
writing natively. What it does do is cache the files to be written until you
tell it to write the cache to disk. You would need something like InCD
(Nero) or DirectCD (Roxio) that uses UDF to write straight to the disk from
another program. XP also does not support directly editing a file on CDRW
media, so again you would need the packet writing software for this
function.

What is packet writing software? I am using MS Word. What does writing
natively mean? Does this mean that I can only save word documents to a or c
drive? I have an icon called Ahead Nero listed under my all programs list
is that what you are referring to? Thanks for your patience

There are two major types of CD writing software in use, one is packet
writing (UDF) and the other is ISO9660. The former allows you to directly
write "on the fly" to a CD like it was a giant floppy. The latter is a
"write at once" style where you choose the files to copy and initiate a
burn. The latter cannot be invoked from inside another program.

The "native" burning tool, or more accurately the CD writing software
included with Windows XP is of the ISO9660 variety. To directly address a
file on CD media from MS Word, you would need to use the UDF type.

Essentially, yes. You can later copy the saved file to CD using WinXP's
burning software or a third party program.

Nero has both types of software available. The icon in the program menu
likely launches the ISO9660 software. It's packet writing software is InCD
and, if installed, is normally loaded at boot. If this were the case, you
would be able to directly save to CD from Word. As you get an error, this
tells me that this is not the case.
