I have a problem access shared files on other computers in
the same workgroup.
The computers are 1,4, and 6 corresponding to their ip
addrs 192.168.1.1, .4, and .6. 1 and 4 run windows xp
professional. 6 runs windows xp home.
Our DSL line comes in to cayman router. cayman router
goes to 6 by one ethernet cable and to a hub by a second
ethernet cable. 1 and 4 connect to the hub.
1 and 4 can ping each other. 6 can ping both 1 and 4.
neither 1 nor 4 can ping 6.
Network neighborhood "view computers" shows all 3
computers on 1 and 4 but only 1 on 6.
1 can access files on both 4 and 6 (even though 1 cannot
ping 6). 6 can access files on 1. 4 can access files on
1 but not on 6 (even though it knows 6 exists via view
computers).
Possible fixes:
1. cable 6 from the hub instead of directly from the
router.
2. define one PC as "host" and the others as "client",
but how? This was suggested by network troubleshooter.
It says network definition wizard must be run for
the "host" computer first and then on each "client." How
can I check to see if one and only one computer is "host?"
3. Please suggest other explanations/ fixes.
