I have 2 computers, both Dells running XP, with IE 6.0.2800. I am trying to access a demo ecommerce system http://demos.mapssystem.net/demos/merchant25/. On one machine the demo works just fine. On the other the home page comes up, but I can't do anything because none of the buttons at the top of the page work. The cursor doesn't even change from an arrow to a hand.

Java or Scrip engine issues.

Java Software Installed. Check your system.

Scripting engine.
Microsoft's Scripting download
Get the latest. Two download versions are available for Windows Script 5.6.
The first version requires Windows 2000, XP; the second version requires
Microsoft Windows 98, Millenium Edition (Me), or NT 4.0. Choose the download
appropriate for your operating system.

Sorry, but neither of these helped. I reinstalled Windows Script, and the
Java page says "installed". I have also compared the security settings and
the advanced options between the two computers, and don't see any
differences.

I looked at the source code, nothing very special.

Could you have some popup or security programs blocking some action of
images.

Blocking Unwanted Cookies with IE 6
There are several new features built-in to IE 6, one of them is the ability
to accept and\or block any or all cookies if desired.

Is the display resolution the same on each?
(Check especially the DPI setting.)

The links are implemented by an image map; so I think that
display resolution might make a difference, however that is just
a guess and I haven't found anything which supports that idea
with a fair bit of searching.

Hmm... I can press Tab and see the links in the Status bar.
Have you tried that instead? Once the link is found by tab
you may see where it's "hotspot" is located by a dotted box.
Put your cursor inside the boxes and see if the pointer changes
to a hand icon.

BTW there is not much programming expertise in this newsgroup
so you might have more luck reposting in one which specializes
in web design (for example.)

Good luck

Nope. Still not getting anywhere. I turned off my Google popup blocker,
temporarily removed all my cookies, and placed the site in my trusted sites.
Still the same result.

Another curiosity. This is the customer demo for the product. There is
also a "sandbox demo", which although it looks very different, is still the
same software: http://demos.mapssystem.net/demos/merchant25user/. The
problem does not occur when I use this demo.

Thanks for the suggestions. However, still no luck.

The resolution of both displays is 1024 x 768.

When I press tab on the machine where the links work, the cursor cycles
through all of the links. However, when I press tab on the machine where
the links at the top don't work, the cursor only cycles through the links at
the bottom, "Your Account, Customer Catalog, etc". Those links have always
worked anyway.
