Dear Microsoft
I am a tutor leading a course in ‘Digital Imaging
Solutions’ at my local college. This is my first year of
teaching the course and I am using ‘Paint Shop Pro 7’
(PSP7) as the course application.
Last year the college computers used the Windows 98
environment for all the college’s software (including
PSP7) and as far as I am aware there were no problems.
This year, however, the college has updated all it’s
computers and software and is running Windows XP
(professional, I believe), but there is a problem
occurring under certain conditions when using PSP7.
The best way I can describe the problem is this:
The program seems fine and will do the tasks it is asked
to perform right up to the point where the student wants
to print the work out and OK’s the print. At this point an
information box appears telling the student that the
program has performed an illegal operation and must close
down the application (PSP7). At which point the student
loses all the work they have done.
As you can imagine this is quite annoying and frustrating
to both the student and myself and to make things worse,
this does not happen under all conditions. On some
occasions the program will print out, whilst on others
occasions it closes down losing valuable student work.
However I have noticed a precursor (and potential
indicator) to when the application is likely to close
down:
If the student goes to Print Preview and there is a blank
screen, then it is at this point that the problem is
likely to occur.
My students will be informed of this problem, and the
indication of when it is likely to occur, at the next
class (and will hopefully be able to Save their work
before losing it), but we still need to find a solution.
I am not a software or computer engineer, but it seems to
me that there is an incompatibility between Windows XP and
the version of PSP7 we are currently running at the
college. If you have any information on a likely remedy,
please would you let me know.
