When I tell an XP machine the name of the Exchange server
and the username it is unable to connect to the Exchange
server. However, when I give the IP address of the
Exchange server and the username the machine is able to
resolve immediately. The problem is I can't get the
machine to receive email or to recognize that is it part
of the network and see the other users. What am I
missing? It used to work on this machine. I don't think
anything has changed but I can't say that for a fact.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Jim

Does everything work OK on your other machines?

Can you ping the server by name and is the IP address resolved correctly
then as well?

Also check the HOSTS-file on that machine and see if it doesn't hold a wrong
IP address for the Exchange server.

If all is correct than open a command prompt and type;
ipconfig /flushdns
This will clear the DNS cache on that machine

If it still fails open your network properties and choose Repair for that
connection

As far as I can tell yes.

I can't ping the server by its alias, only by IP. There
aren't any entries in the hosts file or the lmhosts.sam
file. Is this necessary? None of the other machines on
the network have hosts files and they all work.
Also check the HOSTS-file on that machine and see if it doesn't hold a wrong
IP address for the Exchange server.

I did this and it still didn't work. One thing I did
notice on the server in the Exchange Manager is that this
particular user didn't have her name after the last
person to log/look/access her mail folder on the server.
It was a like toshiba user/NT something or other. All of
the other users had their userID next to their name. I
don't think this is normal.

Remove the laptop from the domain (place it in its own workgroup) and remove
the computer account from the Active Directory. Reboot the laptop and join
it to the domain again.

Roady -

The PC is a desktop and I don't have it in a domain.
It still says Workgroup. It worked when I set it up and
for a long while (months) after that. I am not sure what
has changed with the system but it is starting to tick me
off. I uninstalled Outlook today and reinstalled it but
it is doing the same thing. Not being able to do a
search for the server name and have it find it concerns
me. Another thing that concerns me is there was another
machine in that office that said the "Web Client" thingy
and I don't remember what I did to get rid of it but as
soon as I did it was back on the network and hasn't
experienced a problem since. If I remove the account
from the domain will it lose anything? Thanks for all
your help today!

Removing the computer account from the domain is no problem. The only thing
is that you will have to rejoin the computer to the domain.
Are the TCP/IP settings correct for the machine? Is it configured to use
DHCP or does the client have a static IP?
