Incoming mail server keeps resetting to localhost

Can anyone help? My Outlook Express accounts are being
intermittently reset so the POP3 incoming mailbox
says 'localhost' and consequently I have to manually
correct it when I want to download e-mail. I think it
happens when my kids use Internet Explorer. If I load
Express first, then use Explorer it is Ok.

Does anyone have any bright ideas how I can stop the thing
resetting itself? Thanks.

you are using an antivirus program that scans your email. disable email
scanning in the scanner program.

What a stupid answer by a MVP..."disable your antivirus pop3 scanner"..
So Outlook 2003 doesnt work with antivirus? Jesus...gimme a break

Your antivirus software will catch the virus at the desktop
level. You will not lose protection by doing this, but you
will get back your email functionality.

Actually, that is a very proper answer. Many 3rd party programs that scan
incoming email for viruses and spam, set themselves up as gateways that pull
your e-mail from your ISP's server to themselves. Then, your e-mail client
has to be changed to "localhost" in order to pick the e-mail up from the
scanner program on your local machine. If the scanner has picked up the
mail, it is no longer on the server for your email client to pick up.

If you now want to pick your mail up directly from the ISP, then you must
stop the scanner program from picking up your mail. Otherwise the mail
won't be there for you to pick up.

Your regular virus program (McAfee, Norton, etc) will still check your email
as you attempt to open it, even if you remove the gateway mail scanner
program.

So, apologize to the nice MVP and decide which way you want to handle your
e-mail. Scan it before it gets to your e-mail client, or scan it as you
attempt to open it?

Well, now that you've gone and made new friends.... :-)

It has nothing whatsoever to do with Outlook, or even any mail client.

If the antivirus scanner can't scan mail in a more sophisticated manner than
creating a local proxy for scanning, either upgrade your AV software to a
version/program that handles it better, or disable the mail scanning portion
of your AV software.

Me, I prefer to have as many layers of defense as possible, so I usually
recommend the former approach, but the latter is also perfectly fine advice
as long as the person doing it is sure the realtime functionality of their
AV software is working, and is kept updated regularly.
