I am having a most frustrating time with INCD,,I can get it to format
and copy, but cannot get that disk to run on a different machine.
I wonder if there is a free product that will run with my
OptoRite CW1601?
Unless someone can help me solving the above problem?
BTW Nero came free with my burner.

Welcome to the frustrating world of UDF packet writing. Ahead offers a
free reader at <http://www.nero.com/us/631977199298978.html>. If that
does not solve the problem, ask in comp.publish.cdrom.software, and
mention what version of InCD you have as well as the OS of each machine
you are using. Good luck.

do you know that you have to install the incd reader software on the machine
that reads your incd disk?

I have had the same problems. InCD comes packaged with Nero, but seems
to conflict with Nero. Any disk I create using InCD can only be read
with InCD, so I can't use it for transfering files to other systems.
There is also a conflict with Windows Media Player's Adaptec Plugin. It
seems that Microsofts DRM software tends to disable InCD.

Has anyone had better luck with other UDF software, such as B's Clip? I
know that the WMI Adaptec plugin can be disabled by going to add-remove
programs, and clicking on remove Windows Media Player.

I tried not to install Windows Media Player at all, but when you upgrade
to Internet Explorer 6, it is automatic, like it or not.

Good luck on a solution.

Yes. InCD and Nero are incompatible. Nero is a general CD burning tool.
InCD is one of several (mutually incompatible) tools that use up a
significant part of the CD (20%??) formatting it so that can be used
more or less like a floppy. That ability (adding, deleting, modifying,
cut-and-paste, etc,) is not a normal part of CD usage(using Nero). These
aren't bugs. And also make InCD incompatible with other CD "stuff" as
you have noted. InCD is a specialized application.

I know of no >free< UDF software.

My favorite UDF software is Adaptec's DirectCD - available thru Roxio's Easy
CD Creator up to version 5. It provides CD-closing options that no other
UDF program does, one specifically for the problem you mention, i.e., the
inability to read the CD on another PC. Roxio's Easy CD & DVD Creator v6
has replaced DirectCD with Drag-to-Disc; I just installed it yesterday so I
have no experience with it yet, but at first glance, DirectCD seems more
flexible. I cannot get InCD v4.x to run on my box without conflicting with
Windows Explorer functions, so I reinstalled the latest v3. (BTW, B's Clip
came with my Sony CD burner and brings nothing special to the table --
neither does NTI's.)

To address your problem, both Ahead and Roxio have small free UDF
packet-reading programs that may be installed on computers that do not have
InCD or DirectCD installed. AFAIK they are still available at their sites.
Sorry I don't the links for you. I tried both programs on my PC at work but
could only get one to work; I forget which one.

I have no conflicts with WMP, running both v6.4 and v9 on my Win98SE
machine. However, I don't let ANY software run in the background if I'm not
going to use it (- except for the software that came with my Canon digital
camera). If I need to use UDF software, I launch it when necessary and
terminate it when done. Even tho' programmers like their UDF programs to
load at bootup, it's totally unnecessary. Just disable it's startup, create
a shortcut (in InCD's case), and launch when you want.

I know some people have had problems with InCD but i've been using it
for over a year, with Nero, with no problems. Use it for CD/RW backups
(written a batch program) and for burning my own music compositions. As
a tip, the following version is considered the most bug-free: version
3.5.24.0. One thing; It's difficult successfully to roll versions back
(for some reason) if you're using win98/se. So if you have a later
version probably best not to roll-back. If you've got an earlier
version, though, upgrading to this version might solve your problems.

This last is good advice. Although 4.0.1.0 has been satisfactory for me,
all later versions have caused system freezes at various times when a CD
was in the drive. If I had 3.5.24.0 I'd take Late's advice.

One small point: I've found that it is easy to return to an earlier
version. The update file (for an old version) is quite willing to
update to the old version.
