i stupidly opened an email I shouldnt have and I believe it wiped my outlook
mailbox.pst file. I opened and ran the scanpst.exe and it goes though steps
1-6 and then has an error and shuts down. Are my emails lost forever?

I don't believe any mail you could receive has the ability to "wipe" the
contents of a PST. If you're having trouble with a PST, I'd be surprised if
it's because of anything you've received.

Restore your PST from the periodic backup you make.

I concur that the email itself didnt wipe the pst file. After some
investigating and making a new pst profile and opening the same email, the
same result did not occur.

as to the restore points, i tried that before, but i dont have any restore
points in the month of october and it will not let me go back to a previous
month to pick a restore point. So I am now stuck again.

Restore points do not restore data.

I never said anything about "restore points". I said restore your PST from
the backups of it that you make. System restore points are NOT backups.
You DO make backups of your Outlook data , don't you?
