Inbox numbers

The bracketed numbers against my inbox label do not reduce consistently as I
open the messages. This is irritating. Any solutions gratefully received.

Windows Mail bugs have not been corrected since July 2006, when Microsoft
essentially abandoned the program.

There is no solution other than upgrading to the newer Windows Live Mail:
