Inadvertently closing a program

Using Word and another program is open over it on the screen.

Sometimes when I click on the Word icon in the strip at the bottom of the
screen word immediately closes - without asking if i want to save.

When I re-open Word I have the recovery panel at the right of the screen
showing the Word files that were open when it shut down.

Any suggestions for fixing this would be most appreciated.
