Inactive Program keeps appearing in right hand box

I bought my computer over a year ago and it had McAfee loaded. It has since expired but I keep getting a message during startup to go their web site to upgrade. I want to remove this message. Plus, there is an X across there software embelm on the bottom right hand side of my system. How do I remove this

Uninstall the program through Add./Remove Programs (Control Panel)

Yes, I should have mentioned that but it's not much good without the
updates. Better than nothing but yet........................
