Inability to capture video

This is driving me crazy. I am trying to capture from a
Sony DV camera. It is connected and recognised by Windows
as far as I can tell. When I tell movie maker to start
the capture the tape rewinds then I get a "an unknown
error has occurred" message when the actual capture is
about to begin and the capture dialog ends.

It worked OK before and I have successfully transferred
video from the same camera to the same pc.

Any ideas of where to look for the problem would be
appreciated. Thanks

Hi There,

What changes have you made to your system between "Working" and "Not
Working" ?
Have you added any older graphics package that may have overwritten a
shared file (Some of the cheap and nasty software packages that are about
do not properly deal with version numbers and can cause loads of problems)
Do you have a Restore Point you can roll back to. One made prior to
instalation of other software.
Have you put your camera into VCR mode?
Do you get the small musical note from XP when you turn your camera on. If
not then for whatever reason XP is not seeing your camera.
Is the cable in good condition.
Have you moved any of your PCI cards.
Think about removing your firewire card and very carefully cleaning the
contacts. Please use the minimum pressure when cleaning contacts...and
consider using a hoover to clean out the PCI slot before replacement.
Try standing beyond arms reach and shouting very loudly and slowly at the
computer.
Try standing within reach and wave large hammer at it in a threatening
manner
Blame me, everyone else does.

I don't know what you have tried yet but here are a few
things just in case.

- Make sure you have the driver software installed
correctly. When using XP, all you have to do is plug your
camera in and XP will give you some kind of response as to
seeing the connection.
- While USB will work, IEEE 1394 Fire Wire is the way to
go.
- You HAVE to have you SONY camera in VCR or VTR mode
with the tape in and the power on.

- Double check the camera so that you don't have that AV-
DV feature configured incorrectly. That is used if you
want to run a analog system through your DV camera to be
able to save your old VHS tapes on computer.

- The cable you are using could be a problem too!

I have had no trouble whats so ever hooking everything up
and capturing with in WMM.

I have the same problem. Worked. Stopped
Funny thing is that I don't get the error if I use the default capture quality setting. I only get it when selective the higher resolution choices. So, I suspect it is related (1) to a video driver thing (also new) or dll associated with some other software that was loaded in the interim (I loaded WinDVD creato, amoung other things, around the time I started getting the error).
