Apparently it is possible to do an in-place upgrade from Win Vista Ultimate
to Windows 7 Ultimate, but is it also possible to do an in-place upgrade from
Win Vista Ultimate (x32) to Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) ? TIA ...

No, you can't do an upgrade install from 32 to 64 or from 64 to 32 bit.
Has to be a clean install.

No. It is never possible to change the "bitness" of any installed
Windows. The only way to go from any 32-bit version of Windows to a
64-bit one, or vice-versa, is by doing a clean installation.

Nope, you can't do in-place from 32-bit to 64-bit anything.

You wanna think about that for a second? How do you do an in place
upgrade of all the 32 bit system functions to 64 bit applications?
