in-place reinstall...will it work?

Here is my situation. I just started for a company. They don't have any
backups. They don't have an ERD. They didn't do a regback either. A recent
registry tweak caused the system to blue screen on restart. BSOD trying Safe
Mode. BSOD trying Last Known Good. BSOD trying Safe Mode w/Command Prompt.
BSOD all around. From memory it is a STOP: OXC000024 error.

I have tried doing a parallel installation to get at the registry in the
original install but neither regedit or regedt32 will pull in another local
file.

I found in the Knowledge Base something that basically says to do an
"in-place upgrade" and Windows 2000 should replace the default registry
settings while leaving the 3rd-party tweaks alone.

It may be inevitable that I have to do a clean reinstall but if this is a
last longshot I am willing to take it.

Suggestions or Ideas welcome. Very welcome!

What "tweak"? Yes regedt32.exe can load the hives from the other install.

I the sub-keys for the OS/2 and POSIX subsystem (which I have done countless
times before).

How do I use regedt32.exe to open the hives? Do I do file->open hives and
point it to the other system file in c:\winnt\system32\config?

Run regedt32, then from the Local Machine Hive, choose Registry|Load Hive.
Then navigate to the location of the hive you want to edit/read. Give it
some tempname (doesn't matter what). Then when your done, move the cursor
back to tempname, then Registry|Unload Hive, Registry|Exit

Ah I did it. I loaded the hives and put back the keys, restarted and
they are up now! Thanks!

Glad to hear it.

Just out of curiosity. CAN you do an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000 over a
prior Windows 2000 installation?
