in need of advice

hi ,my sons acer laptop seems to have developed a fault,when he powers up
after a short sime it just shuts down .sometimes it will load the os (vista
hp)and sometimes it wont even get to the boot screen .i have noticed that the
fan is not working ,i think this may be the problem so i need some
clarification so i can narrow down the possible causes ,the laptop is still
under warranty but if a virus is the cause then i can attempt to recover from
the partition .on the rare occasion it tries to load the bios i get asked for
a password which i know has never been set by me could the manufacturer have
set this to protect the bios settings?
any advise will be greatley appreciated
 
thanks for the quick response,i think i solved it,i pressed the outer casing
above the fan and it started working so i think i will get it checked out
while it is still under warranty still concerned about the bios password
though maybe it's a default password set by acer would appreciate any ideas
 
thanks patrick,i fully intend taking the laptop back to pc world to have the
fan checked out while it is still in warranty.as to the password issue you
have hit the nail on the head with it being an ex demo so thanks for your
advice
