Over the past two weeks I've been getting an increasing number of
automated e-mail replies and failure-to-send notices in my inbox. It's
up to around 300 per day now, and it's really pissing me off. There's a
major problem somewhere.

I've run Norton AntiVirus 2002, AVG, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware with their
latest updates, and my system appears completely clean, but I'm worried
that I have some kind of re-mailing virus/script on my system that isn't
being picked up. Otherwise, why would I be getting all these automated
replies? Many of which are failure-to-send notices for random names @
very recognizable domains. i.e. (e-mail address removed)

I'm running Windows XP Pro with all the updates.

Yep, there is ... spammers and most modern viruses.

Two possible answers:

Someone you know (your email address is on their computer) is infected
with a virus trying to replicate, and it is forging your address as
the FROM: address, so you get the bounce.

A spammer has used your address from his list, as a place marker, in
the FROM: field, and you are getting the bounces to non-existent
addresses. The spam run may be 500 ... 5,000 spams?

...and a firewall?

If you used Pegasus mail as your email client, you can use the POP3 email filter rules. It
has the ability to scan the headers and/or body for text strings and automatically delete
them on the server rather than downloading them to your PC.

This way you can examine the 300 mails you receive, find the common string that is in all of
them and use the POP3 filter. Then you won't see them anymore.

If you're using OE or Outlook, then take them out of their sending and
receiving emails on startup and on a timed basis, which will force up to
take control as to when emails are downloaded to the machine or sent from
the machine. You can then use Mailwasher to delete the emails from the POP3
server and pull the ones you want and go on about your business.
