$ in file name?

Hello

A friend is trying to delete some Word files using Windows Explorer
and finds that some files cannot be deleted. He then finds that a file
is created with the $ sign taking the first 2 letters of the file
name...any ideas please?

templates. They are deleted when Word is closed.

I knew about the ~$ but the friend said that no tilde just $ infront
of the file name...however he also said that Word was not open at the
time!!

There's a virus kicking around that plays havoc with Word document files.

Is it possible Word closed with a crash, but still has a "hook" in the
document? Try the Task Manager and see if WINWORD is still running.
