I inadvertently deleted a partition during a Windows XP Pro installation.
The disk in mention was setup as a slave drive, but it contained very
important data of which I don't have a backup. To make things worse, this
is not my computer we are talking about, it is my boss' computer.

How can I recover??? I haven't written anything to the disk since deleting
the partition....

Help Please.

Sorry! When you delete a partition, you irreversibly delete all
files and data that was on that partition. Did you not perform
a file backup prior to installing Windows XP?

Perhaps the following third-party program will help:

Active@ Partition Recovery

Download USER MANUAL in PDF format

Find another job, quick.

I suggest that you contact www.drivesavers.com for help, it
may cost a bundle, but they can recover just about anything.
I suggest that you remove the hard drive (at least remove
the cables) so no further read/writes will be done on the
drive.

Did the XP Pro installation complete? It is possible that
the installation over-wrote some or all of the deleted
partition, however the data may still be recoverable at a
price.

There are undelete programs that can recover a partition,
but I'm not sure if they will work after the XP install
completed.

The installation did NOT complete because this was not the disk I was
installing Windows XP on. This disk was only setup as a slave drive but I
mistankenly selected and deleted it's partition, but I immediatly removed the
drive from the computer, so nothing has been further written to it, so
physically the data should still be there.

Help me please

You tell him first that the data was "irreversibly" deleted and then suggest
data recovery alternatives. Good job.

Do a Google for "disk recovery" and "partition recovery" and
you should get some hits. I highly suggest that you contact
Drive Savers since they are the professional experts on this
sort of thing. They have some free FAQ and will give some
free advice by email/phone to see whether you are are
candidate for their service or if self-help will fix your
problem.

Thank you for noting the contradiction in my original reply.
It is now 11:15 AM and I'm fully awake.

Thanks Guys.

PROBLEM SOLVED! I used Partition Manager and it brought that disk right
back to life. I guess deleting a partition is not irreversible after all.
My blood pressure is back to normal too!

Recommendation for MICROSOFT: Add an UNDELETE PARTITION tool to the
installation part of the OS for people like me who inadvertently delete the
wrong partition so it can be immediately recuperated once nothing else has
been written to the disk.

'but it contained very important data of which I don't have a backup.'
That a contadiction, no backup? cannot be v.important

The problem is not really solved until all important data is routinely
backed-up.
Remember a hard drive can fail at any time and then the data may be really
gone.

And a backup isn't finished until there are copies in
several different locations.

A small firesafe is not a bad idea either, considering the cost of software
and the need to keep one's calling card template.. :)

If you have the budget, on-line back-up, an off-site SAN,
mirrored servers at several locations so the earthquake,
fire, flood and tornado won't also happen when the hurricane
and tsunami happen.

I would use BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30
day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

Boot the floppy, Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on
Partition work. There should be free space shown in the middle;
highlight it and click Undelete

Use Ontrack EasyRecovery v6.0
Excellent tool, use RawRecovery option as it will read data from HD without
any partitions (your case)

I suggest you use Partition Table Doctor to resolve your
problem. The software provides very useful functions:
Backup partition table, Restore partition table, Rebuild
partition table, undelete partition, Fix boot sector,
rebuild mbr,etc.

First thing I recommend you download the demo version of
Partition Table Doctor.( http://www.ptdd.com/download.htm )

Run the program and select "Rebuild Partition Table",
then choose "Interactive" mode.
