I can use the wizard to make a form/subform using all tables, and I can get
the wizard t o work if the parent form is based on a query and the subform is
based on a table, but I cannot do the same if the subform is based on a query.

A query should behave the same as a table, as long as you have not criteria
that might be interfering with the return of records. Does your query have
criteria?

What wizard? :-)

Just create a form bound the the query, and laid out exactly as you want for
your subform. Save Close.

Then open the main form in design view. Drag the form from the Forms tab of
the database window onto your open main form. Voila! Subform.

You might then check the LinkMasterControls/LinkChildControls property of
the subform control, to ensure Access understood the connection between the
main form and subform as you intended.
