Maybe you have a macro that's using that key combination.

Try starting excel in Safe mode

close excel
windows start button|run|
excel /safe

Try the shortcut key.

If it works correctly, then the macro idea may have some merit.

Close excel and reopen it normally.
(It's still broken, right?)

If not, try to find the workbook where it doesn't work and open that one.

Once you get it broken, you can try to fix it <vbg>.

Now hit ctrl-F8 to get to the VBE
then hit ctrl-g to see the immediate window.
Type this in and hit enter:
Application.OnKey "^;"

Then back to excel to see if it's fixed.

FYI: One way to disable this keystroke combination would be:
Application.OnKey "^;", ""

But I bet you don't want to do this each time you open excel. You can try to
find the offending workbook that contains the code that disables ctrl-; by using
some of the techniques at Chip Pearson's site:

http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

Essentially, you're going to move stuff out of your XLStart folder and uncheck
everything under Tools|Addins. (But keep track!)

Then one by one, you'll add one back and restart excel to see if that caused the
problem.

Then go attack the developer of that workbook.

Nothing happened as in good nothing happened or nothing changed?

Either way, I don't think I have another guess.

Well, maybe... Is your keyboard programmable? Maybe something got changed
there.

Thanks and nothing happened to the cell -------- if it is empty, it remains
empty; if it has text, the text remains there!

It seems that it just cant feel my key combination !!!!

In fact, I have been using this method for a long time in many versions of
excel and it is the first time i am unable to do it !

My keyboard is just a normal keyboard!

By the way, similar methods for inserting times dont work either !!!!! Can
u give me some other key combinations for me to test?

Thanks

You can search Excel's help for shortcuts and get a lot of them.

Or you can look at Chip Pearson's site:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/ShortCuts.htm

Or David McRitchie's:
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/shortx2k.htm

Or Debra Dalgleish's:
http://www.contextures.com/excel.htm

ctrl-c is copy
ctrl-x is cut
ctrl-v is paste
ctrl-p is print

for a few.

Maybe your ctrl key is stuck. Those cut/copy/paste should work in every
application. Can you try them to see if they work elsewhere?
