I am new to Windows Movie Maker and need a little help. I have a home movie
saved on my computer and am trying to import it onto Movie Maker but when I
do it gives me a error message. Could someone please tell me what I have done
wrong. Thank you

Error message: the file c:\documents and settings\general\my documents\my
videos\scooter.mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to playthe
file is not installed on your computer.

You need to look online for a codec for the file type that you are trying to
import. Do a google for x codec (replace x with the file type) and use that.
Alternatively, in the Import dialogue box, click on the drop down menu, and
select 'all supported files'. If your file isn't shown you need to convert it
to one of the formats. On the same drop down menu, look for 'Video Files' and
there should be a list of *.mpg and *.avi and a few others. Make a mental
note of one of these extensions (not mpg) and locate the file in explorer. Go
to Tools > Folder Options.... Then, go to the View tab and uncheck the entry
'Hide extensions for known file types'. Click OK and right click the video
file and select rename from the list. Delete the part after the '.' and
replace it with the extension you chose in Movie Maker. Hit enter and click
yes at the warning dialogue. Import it in Movie Make and it should work.
Hope this helps.

If you do find a codec that works you are still likely to have problems
working with MPG files.
I recommend converting the MPG's to AVI's or WMV's and importing those into
Movie Maker.
