Importing videos to collections

I can't import more than one video clip into a single collection - each clip
I import creates a new collection. This results in only a single clip being
shown in the "Contents" pane depending on the "collection" I choose. I would
like to have more than one clip per collection, and more than one clip at a
time appearing on the Contents pane. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?
I am using WMM version 2.1.4026.0. Thanks.

That's simply the way the program works. Some call it a feature I have
always considered it a nuisance.
You have to move it to the collection you want after importing it.
See "Organize Collections" in the Movie Maker -> How-To's section of my
website.

BTW, this "feature" has been taken care of in Vista. :)

I read the summary on your web site, but I'm still confused... I imported
about 85 clips the other day & each one ended up in it's own collection as
the original poster mentioned. I created a new collection and "think" I
moved video clips into it as you suggested, but I still can't see any more
than one clip at a time. Could you please elaborate a bit?

This is only my second project in WMM. In the first one, I somehow ended up
with all of the clips in one collection as I was easily able to combine
several of them into larger clips, making them easier to work with. I can't
seem to duplicate that now.

One aside... on your web site description, you suggest not letting the
computer split the video into clips based on camera starts & stops... I'm
just curious as to why. I tend to stop & start the camera when I think I
want to do so and don't usually find that those times are wrong. Or, am I
again misreading something here?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Dan,
I am not sure if this will really elaborate a bit or not but...
Basically if you imported 85 video clips then it should have created 85
different collections - one for each video clip.
Now if you want them all in one collection you need to either use one of the
collections created or create a new one and then go to each collection
separately and drag the clip to the one collection the same as you would
move a file using Windows Explorer. Make sense?

Basically you have a lot of time spent dragging each video one at a time to
a single collection and then deleting each separate empty collection which
is one thing I like much better about Movie Maker in Vista since everything
is imported into the "Imported media" folder and you can move it from there.

I did that, but can still only see one video clip at a time... it's like
each collection was just grouped under the first one... the individual clips
didn't show up. I'll have to try again.

Thanks.

I've been using WMM for years and have the same issue. Half the time the
clips are imported each as a separate collection and half the time the clips
all show up in one collection pane. I've always assumed it's a flaw in the
basic software. I've never found a "fix". Thanks for your post. Now I know
I'm not alone with this issue.

Frankr,

Its probably not much comfort to you but I have the same problem. MM worked
great then stopped. Funny thing is though that multiple JPEGs can be imported
but only one .avi file.
Tried reinstalling, uninstalling and installing SP3 to no avail. Why aren't
microsoft addressing this ?
