Importing video: HOW?

Please bear with me as I have no idea what I am doing yet...I am trying to
import several different video projects into Windows Movie Maker (to make a
reel out of finished videos) and each one I try has got no file to choose
when the import file box pops up. I see that the files are there but they
must not be of the file type supported (?), so I have nothing available to
select. I see some IFO, and BUP files, and some that say "power DVD" under
them. Do I have to convert some of these to AVI? If so which ones do I want
to convert? A couple of the DVD's have several different videos on them, but
two have only one video. I don't understand...

No VOB files, only "power dvd." Should I use "A1 dvd Ripper" I found on
download.com? It says it rips and converts dvd files to avi. I want avi
files, yes?

Hi Julie
I don't have any experience with "A1 DVD Ripper" either but I suspect it
will do the job as long as the DVD you are trying to rip from is not
protected (not a store bought DVD) since that would be a copyright
infringement issue. Personally I use Nero if I need to get a clip off one of
my DVD's so if you have the full version of Nero it will do the job and you
don't have to worry about some of the risks of using FREE software. And to
answer your question YES you want to end up with an AVI file to import into
Movie Maker. Have a look at this website for more information and programs
for converting from DVD(VOB) to AVI: http://www.videohelp.com/convert
