Importing Video from Mini DV Camcorder

I have a Sony DCR-HC32 Mini DV Camcorder and a Dell computer running XP and
I'm trying to import video into Movie Maker. I have a USB cable connected
between the two and I am able to capture video, so the two are talking to
each other. What I can't figure out is how to dump the video I have on the
Mini DV back on to the computer. The Sony has 3 modes: a tape mode, a memory
mode and a play/edit mode. If I go into the play/edit mode, I get a blue
screen saying USB mode -- disconnect cable before changing settings. I have
enabled the USB streaming option from the camcorder settings. Any help
appreciated. Thanks.

So, it will capture video, but not play it back? Because it is capturing
video via USB just fine.

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.
How do you know it is capturing just fine though if you can't play it back?

First of all, I noticed you used the phrase "import" rather than "capture". I
am assuming you are using Movie Maker 2? In the Movie Tasks pane below item
1, Capture Video, there are four options:

Capture from video device
Import video
Import pictures
Import audio or music

Are you using Capture from video device or Import video? To transfer video
from the camcorder to the PC, you should be using the first option. This will
open a video capture wizard, which should be pretty self explanatory.

I have a Sony DCR-HC20 and the USB connection works fine for capturing
video. You are correct to have the USB Streaming option turned on. The thing
that sticks out for me is the message you described, "USB mode -- disconnect
cable before changing settings". Does this message remain on the screen or do
the buttons appear on the screen? If the buttons do not display in Play/Edit
mode, try touching the screen and see if they appear.

I hope this helps.
