Importing PST Files

I have outlook 2000.

I brought my contacts list in a pst file from work with a newer version of
outlook (do not know what it is) - I am trying to import it to my laptop so I
go into:
file
import/export
import from another file (next)
personal folder file (next)
browse and select file
(originally I had this on a cd, i tried that way with no success
then I put the file on my desktop, again no success
then i put the file in the hidden foler, once again, no success

in all cases I get a window waying "properties for this information sevice
must be defined prior to use"

then I get a window waying "the file _______contacts.pst is not compatible
with this version of the personal folders information service."

What can I do to get this transphered properly?
I can not go back and redo it as a csv file.... help? please! :)

The first thing you want to do is remove the read only attribute from the
PST. This happens when it's backed up to CD. When you copy it back to the PC,
you have to remove the attribute since Outlook requires read/write access.

You need to know what the version of Outlook is at work. If it's 2003, the
PST from that version is not compatible with older versions of Outlook. You'd
have to follow the steps here:

Thank you for your reply K. Orland....

When I copied the file from the cd, I looked at the properties adn the read
only box was not checked off.... is there another way that this file would be
considered read only and if so, how do I remove this attribute?

Thanks :)

Bad move. Never import from or export to a PST. You lose data that way.
Just open the PST in Outlook with FIle>Open>Personal Fodlers File.
file
import/export
import from another file (next)
personal folder file (next)
browse and select file
(originally I had this on a cd, i tried that way with no success

sevice must be defined prior to use"

service."

Ms. Orland's addressed this.

The PST you have cannot be used in Outlook 2000. You'll have to tell
Outlook 2003 at your work to generate one in Outlook 97-2002 format.
Instructions on how have been posted numerous times in this very newsgroup
and Google Groups will find them for you. You could also just visit the URL
Ms. Orland gave you.

Firstly of all do NOT use the import function - that is designed for
importing data from non-Outlook applications. Secondly, have you removed the
Read-Only attribute from the file? If not, then do so. then in Outlook go to
File-Open-Outlook data File and navigate to where you put the file.
