Importing pst files from 2000 to 2003 and missing contacts

Hi! I have recently upgraded to office 2003 and installed it on a fresh
windows XP install on an old (pIII 933) pc I use just for email and
messaging. My problem is that after I imported my .pst file (or is it .ost?)
when I write a new message I am unable to open my address book. I get the
error
"The address list could not be displayed. The contacts folder associated
with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or
deleted, or you do not have permissions. .... "

All of my contacts are however in my contacts section in the left hand pane
so they evidently were moved to the new system correctly. Is this a 2000 to
2003 glitch or am I doing something wrong?

You did something wrong. Importing is never the correct way to transfer
Outlook data.
Hard to know what you've lost or corrupted. If you're lucky, the only thing
lost is the connection between your Contacts Folder and the Outlook Address
Book. Do you now have more than one Contacts Folder? If not, then just make
sure your current Contacts Folder has been enabled as an email address book
in its properties.

Thanks Russ,

I had corrupted the conection it looks like. I followed the instructions
from another post and deleted my address book and reinstalled it. All of my
data was still there it was just not showing in the address book. You say
that importing is never the correct way transfer outlook data? How is it done
then? I have been doing it this way for a good while, not saying its the
right way, just that I don't know of the right way.

The right way is simply to copy your Outlook data file and open it or reuse
it in the other installation. Importing always loses and often misdirects
data.
