importing/pictures

When I import in still pictures into MM2 they are blurry. The pictures
themselves are of good quality, taken with a digital camera. They were great
printed out as well as viewing them on the computer. It is only once they
are imported that they are not nearly as clear (ie I can't read some printing
on one that is VERY clear).

Can anyone help on why this happens/what can I do?

Thanks

Hello,

Check out the section on pictures in the MMovie Maker section (Tutorial) of my
web site.....basically, you need to crop the image to the target ratio...4:3 ot
16:9 and then resample to the target size....720 x 480 etc

The above is because Movie Maker is pretty lousy at dealing with resampling to
the correst size. If you have a program like Photoshop you can use restricted
rubber bands which you can move around the picture to get the best bit....it
makes the job very easy

For the "why" part:

It happens because your input image is always resized to the output size
using a simplistic resampling algorithm.

For the "what can I do" part:

To get a crisp output using still images (especially continaing text):

1. Make your slides at the size of 640x480.
2. Export using a profile that exports to 640x480 output size such as "High
quality Video (large)"

For 16:9 change the sizes in above two points to 856x480.

Note: Do not export using the profiles using NTSC or PAL in their name.
These encode the output to 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) using non-square
pixel encoding. These are *not* suitable for crisp output from still images
because for these output sizes there is always an internal resampling step
involved which destroys the crispiness.

Hello,

You had been put right once about this and as I understand you accepted
you were wrong...ALL of the info you gave in this message is plain and
simple WRONG...why do you persist after being told by microsoft that you are
wrong???? Strange fellow you are

Hello again,

Here is the supporting advice as given by a Microsoft employee...

John's reply is correct. The problem you're facing is that images are square
pixels and video is typically non-square pixels. It sounds like you want to
output as 16:9 PAL which will have a resolution of 720x576 but those pixels
are actually wider than they are taller so that when rendered they make up
the 16x9 frame.

However your images will have square pixels so you will need to resize/crop
your picture so your resolution matches the 16:9 ratio. As you're using PAL
you're better off resizing/cropping your images to 1024x576. (that way it
only gets resized horizontally by MovieMaker). As John said you're probably
better off cropping the 16:9 area of the picture you're interested in and
then resizing that crop to the 1024x576 resolution. If you've done it right
nothing should look stretched in your image.

Jen

Hello,

It seems that REHAN is fed up of being corrected and added me to his kill list.
In the meantime the team member from Microsoft who gave the advice is the one
to follow....sorry for the confusion that has been caused by Rehans advice.
