AppName: powerpnt.exe AppVer: 10.0.4205.0 ModName:
comctl32.dll ModVer: 5.81.4916.400

It used to work.

There has been no obvious failure or event on my Windows
2000 Professional. Windows was fully up to date. After
the failure, I brought office fully up to date, but that
didn't help.

Any advice?

Have you tried running a Detect and Repair from the Help menu? It's
worth a shot.

Also, I see a number of references to this .dll file in various
newsgroups, but I can't find anything that seems specific to your issue.
I do see a couple of articles where printer drivers replace that .dll
file with different versions, and that causes problems, but those are
Windows 95, so...

Thank you for your recommendation.
It did not work, but it was worth a try.
I'm wondering whether I should uninstall and reinstall.

Hi,

Comctl32.dll is Windows Common Controls. It's what Windows uses to generate
Dialog Boxes, List boxes etc. I would have thought Detect and Repair would
have fixed it. Do you get a specific error message or particular behaviour?
What specifically are you doing in PowerPoint when it crashes? Have you
installed the latest Service Packs for Windows 2000, or have you made any
recent changes to Windows? Also, the dll may be damaged. Also again, Echo
may have been close to the mark as some programs apparently replace the file
with their own version.

That would be my first guess....something recently installed has written
over comctl32.dll with it's own (probably older) version.

Well, I can't find anything easy to understand about how to get that
file back in Win2000, but I did find this for Win95 <g>

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;140749

Basically, you'd have to rename comctl32.dll to comctl32.old at a
command prompt and then get the original comctl32.dll file from your
install CDs.

And although the problem's not the same here,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279023&Product=win2000
suggests updating IE to get the required COM files. I believe that
updating IE updates comctl32.dll as well -- at least, that's what the
threads I turned up on Google Groups lead me to believe.

I dunno, though, IAPX86, I might post this question in
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.win2000.general
(http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp?icp=mscom&slcid=US)
is one address for the web interface where you can find that group as
well. Someone there may be able to suggest something better for you.
Mention that we sent you over there, and also don't forget to mention
you're using Windows 2000, whatever service packs you might have
installed on it, and which version of IE you're using (just in case
that's relevant).

Thank you Echo, Glen, and Taj, for your suggestions.
I will update IE and hope for the dll to be updated.

The problem manifests when I try to import a picture.
The dialog box for file browsing appears but does not fill.
Then a dialog box offering to report the problem to
Microsoft, that I have allowed to report several times.
Then the program crashes and relaunches.

I also noted that the dll appears in four places:
08/29/2002 529,680 C:\WINNT\system32\
08/29/2002 529,680 C:\WINNT\system32.dllcache\
07/22/2002 552,208 C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$\
06/19/2003 550,672 C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386\
I assume the one directly under system32 is the target.
I will report back.

Reinstalling IE 6 SP1 did not fix the problem.

Seems to me if you have this .dll crashing, updating/reinstalling th
video driver for you particular card would be a wise move.
This is not a jest.

Sure, that's worth a shot, too!

Nuts. You might try reinstalling or updating your video driver, as David
Redwine suggested.

Have you tried this:

- Remove all pictures from the folder that PPT looks in by default when you
choose Insert, Picture, From File
- Put one and only one *known valid* picture into that folder (the runner at
the starting gun from My Documents\My Pictures\Samples is the one I'd
suggest
- Try inserting that as you'd normally do

Point being that the idiot dialog box insists on showing you image previews.
If something in the image makes the image preview code go urp, then you get
.... well, you get something like what you're already way too familiar with.
;-)
