Importing outlook 2003 .pst files into outlook 2002

Hi, Guru's,
Most of what I am asking here has been asked before, but I'd like to think I
could put a slightly different spin on things!
I am trying to import a .pst file saved in Outlook 2003 into Outlook 2002.
As we have already established, we need to make sure the .pst file is saved
or exported in the correct format for Outlook 2002.
However, and here's the rub, my laptop was bought from a friends company and
it was set up to update over a network. When I went to export in the correct
format for 2002, it tried and failed to install an extra import/export wizard
from the network. The old network.
Now I have rebuilt my Laptop, I only have 2002 not 2003, and a huge 2003
..pst file!
Is there absolutely no way to recover this apart from buying outlook 2003?
Help!

Download a trial version of Outlook 2003 from Microsoft's Office web site.

Here is an idea. Assuming the file is for the same user, you have to make
sure Outlook is not running on the orginal computer so the file isn't locked
then try copying the file to the new location and configure Outlook to refer
to that new file or import the file. I do not think version 2003 or 2002 pst
would make a difference.

Aaaaaaaahhh, so near yet so far, I really thought you were onto something but
the same error appeared - incompatibility with the personal information
service whatsit.
Ah, well, maybe I could use the other suggestion and download the evaluation
copy of 2003, save the folder in 2002 format and then try again!
Cheers anyway,
Ed

Yes, it does. Outlook 2003's newer, default .pst files cannot be read by
earlier versions of Outlook.

Hi, Brian, and all,
I downloaded a trial version of Outlook 2003, along with all the other
office stuff, and once installed, there is virtually no functionality to it,
you can't import and export, you can't send and receive, you can't do
anything! I am uninstalling it, and then I shall reinstall the whole lot,
removing old office from the equation as well in the hope that it works!
Let me know if there's something fundamental tat I might have missed out.
Cheers,
Ed

You don't want to import and export anyway. However, my understanding is
that the trial version of Office is fully functional for 60 days.

It makes all the difference in the world, because that's the OP's stated
problem: he wants to open an Outlook 2003-format PST in Outlook 2002.
