Importing Outlook 2000 pst file into Outlook 2002

I have just upgraded from Win & Office 2000 to XP by
rebuilding my machine, rather than upgrade packages. I
have backed up my old Outlook 2000 pst, and need to
import the contacts, emails, etc into my new Outlook XP
(2002).

I have tried creating a new account linked to the pst
file, I have tried the file import option, and the
file/open data file option. My PC is a standalone
machine, so I'm not linked to a network. Outlook XP
recognises the file and shows the Personal folder, but
there are no contacts or emails shown in it.

This process always worked if I had to rebuild 2000, how
can I get it to work with XP? And I've read the
slipstick articles - they haven't solved the problem.

You did not describe in sufficient detail what you did and what happened.
When you opened this PST file, what happened?

To use another PST file (such as one from an earlier installation) and set
it to be the default for your current installation of Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST file you'd like to use
as your new default. Then use the following directions:

- Go to Tools > Options > Mail Setup > Data Files > Add...
- Add the PST you'd like as your new default, then Close > OK to exit the
Options dialog
- Go to Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts
- Select the PST you just added in the "Deliver New e-mail to the following
location" dropdown (it will most likely appear just below the current
default Personal Folders file) > Finish
- Exit and Restart Outlook
- You can now close the previous default PST (R-click on that pst folder
while in Folder View and select "Close <foldername> Folders"). If you have
any information in your former PST that you'd like to transfer to your new
default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the other before you close
it.

I want to import the email messages from my previous
(Outlook 2000) pst into my new Outlook 2002 default
folder - contacts, inbox, sent items, calendar, etc.

I know where my old pst file is. I open Outlook 2002. I
have tried using the import mechanism, the open data
folder option, and the set up new default account. Each
time, Outlook 2002 opens a Personal folder with the
default folders, but no items.

I have gone to the Tools -> Options -> Mail setup -> Data
Files, and the file is there and the file location is
correct. I know I have items in my old pst file (it's
about 55Mb), so why can I not see them in Outlook 2002?

I transferred it by copying it from my c drive to my d
drive (separate physical drives). I've only formatted my
c drive, my d drive is for data only.

I've got other older backups, and the same thing is
happening with them, but I've restored them into Outlook
2000 before, so I don't understand why they won't go into
Outlook 2002.

If I could, I would uninstall Office XP and reinstall
Office 2000 to see if it will open there again, but I'm
not sure about being able to activate Office XP on the
same product number again afterwards. Is this possible?

Reinstalling Outlook 2000 won't help. PST files are perfectly compatible
between the versions. That is not the problem.

What do you mean your data drive isn't formatted? You still did not tell me
how you created this PST file. Have you tried running the Inbox Repair Tool
on this PST file?

Surely the data drive is formatted, though, or your OS wouldn't even see it.
I suspect you mean you just don't have an OS on that drive.
Are you sure you copied the right file?
The Inbox Repair Tool should have an icon in Office Tools. If not, search
for "scanpst.exe" and run it against the file.

I just found and copied the pst file created by Outlook
2000 from the outlook location to my backup folder,
nothing else. And I didn't format my data hard disk when
I moved from 2000 to XP, so everything I put there should

needed to re-build my machine under 2000, so I assumed it

I haven't tried the inbox repair tool - didn't know there

I transferred it by copying it from my c drive to my d
drive (separate physical drives). I've only formatted
my
c drive, my d drive is for data only.

I've got other older backups, and the same thing is
happening with them, but I've restored them into
Outlook
2000 before, so I don't understand why they won't go
into
Outlook 2002.

If I could, I would uninstall Office XP and reinstall

not sure about being able to activate Office XP on the
same product number again afterwards. Is this
possible?

I want to import the email messages from my previous

I know where my old pst file is. I open Outlook

Each
time, Outlook 2002 opens a Personal folder with the

is
correct. I know I have items in my old pst file

To use another PST file (such as one from an

it to be the default for your current installation
of
Outlook, you will
first need to know the location and name of the PST
file
you'd like to use

directions:

- Go to Tools > Options > Mail Setup > Data Files >
Add...
- Add the PST you'd like as your new default, then
Close
OK to exit the
Options dialog
- Go to Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change
existing e-mail accounts
- Select the PST you just added in the "Deliver
New e-
mail to the following
location" dropdown (it will most likely appear just
below the current
default Personal Folders file) > Finish
- Exit and Restart Outlook
- You can now close the previous default PST (R-
click
on
that pst folder
while in Folder View and select "Close

any information in your former PST that you'd like
to
transfer to your new
default PST, you can drag and drop from one to the

This was posted in another group, may be of use?

Have you already ran scanpst.exe against it? How did you previously back up
the file? If you did this while Outlook was open you've been backing up
corrupted files (ever tested a back up?)

You can use the following tool to restore these type of corruptions;

||||||||||| (2002).
|||||||||||
||||||||||| I have tried creating a new account linked
| to
||| the
||||||| pst
||||||||||| file, I have tried the file import option, and the
||||||||||| file/open data file option. My PC is a standalone
||||||||||| machine, so I'm not linked to a network. Outlook XP
||||||||||| recognises the file and shows the Personal folder, but
||||||||||| there are no contacts or emails shown in it.
|||||||||||
||||||||||| This process always worked if I had to
| rebuild
||||| 2000,
||||||||| how
||||||||||| can I get it to work with XP? And I've read the
||||||||||| slipstick articles - they haven't solved
| the
||||||| problem.
