Hi There
I open Movie Maker 2.1.4026.0 (have WinXP SP2 installed)
I create a New Project
From the File menu I choose Import into Collection
I select a 650MB MPG file ( created in AverTV USB 2.0 - converted Tape to
Digital media)
It Imports the MPG, but after a couple of seconds MM closes down on me.
I've tried the Codec Trick that is advocated on http://www.the-kellys.org/
but this does nothing for me.

I've also tried to import a smaller MPG on my PC (50Mb) and that seems fine
Any ideas on what the problem is here, and how to fix it?
Or if you know of a truly free MGP Editing programme.

Your problem is a known issue. MPEG files especially MPEG2 files do not work
properly with Movie Maker. This is because most of the DirectShow codecs
made for mpeg2 files are designed mainly for playback while compromising the
features required of editing.

Anyway, you can either try some other codec which is designed especially for
editing such as MainConcept's ($$$) or convert the file to an AVI.

If all you have to do is cut scenes, the best option would be to try
something like VideoReDo which can do the editing without requiring
re-encoding.

Free options include:
Cuttermaran http://cuttermaran.movie2digital.de/cuttermaran_e/index.htm

For other options see the www.videohelp.com/edit

Hello there,

Your problem is caused by the fact that there is not just one MPeg codec and
that most of the good ones require a licence fee. The result is that even
though MM claims to be able to use MPeg it can only use the very base
definition and as soon as it comes across anything it does not understand it
turms its toes up!!

You would probably find that converting to AVI might be your solution so that
you can use the features of Movie Maker....there is a brilliant web site called
Video Help which you can get to by goimg to my web site and click on GREAT

Good Luck :)
