Importing MPEG4 to Movie Maker

I am getting the usual message when I try to import a clip into movie maker.

"The file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My
Videos\CLIP0001.AVI cannot be imported because the codec required to play the
file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download
and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to
import the file again."

According to G-Spot, the codec, XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder, is installed.
The clip plays on Media player, so that doesn't surprise me. Is there some
way to get movie maker to recognise and use this codec?

I have read the previous suggestions for this problem, and had a look at
PapaJohn's website, but haven't found anything which helps.

The clip is MPEG-4, not MPEG-2. Nothing I have on my computer seems to be
capable of converting it to AVI.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, PapaJohn.

I ended up downloading the codec again (thanks to a link on your site), and
it all seems to be working now. I didn't bother doing it before because
GSpot said I already had the codec and I thought I didn't need to.

I can now import MPEG-4 files straight in to Movie Maker, without having to
convert them to anything else first.

For anyone else having the same problem, this is what I did:

Go to PapaJohn's website and click on Setup>Other software.

Find the line which says: " Divx, Divx 3, Divx 5.0, XVID codecs can be
downloaded from WMPlugins.com:" (about 1/5 down the page)

Click on Divx (because that's what GSpot told me it used), and follow the
instructions from there.

Again, many thanks.

Em.

I went there.
But I still don't see where is the Setup to be clicked.
Don't know why?
Can you give me a direct link to go there?
Thanks.

John,
I want to see Mpeg 4 file in WMP2.
I could not see the left pane still.
still.... Please wait, preloading menu images... Only.
Thanks
I downloaded it as per Em advice of the Divx codec from there.
But only Divx player and DivX movie could be installed.
I still could not import my MPEG-4 file straight into the Window Movie
Player 2 with
success like EM says.

That's because, as Papajohn said in his first response, you need to convert
them to AVI before using in Movie Maker. There are websites out there,
including Microsoft.com, that list files that are compatible with Movie
Maker but many of the files listed either do not work at all or cause
issues. MPEG files are one of those problems.

Help! I just tried Movie Maker. Works well, except it doesn't allow MPEG4
files. I didn't know what these were, but it looks like itunes converted all
my music files to MPEG4, which Movie Maker can't use. Do you have a quick
fix for me? Thanks in advance.

I have read and reread all these posts about downloading a codec to allow me
to use movie maker to edit MPEG4 video, but I am just not getting it.

There seems to be verious mentions of differnt things to download. Divx,
gspot, codecs, etc. I am confused by exactly what I need to do.

Are teh codecs applied to anything, or is just having them on my PC enough.

Can someone outline the steps I need to follow?

Sory to be so dense, I am just not sure what exactly I need to do.

Thanks,
David
