Importing Media Player .avi files into Movie Maker

I'm trying to get a Media Player 10 .avi file imported into Movie Player so I
can grab bits of it for a presentation. I keep getting error message that it
can't find the right codec. "0xC00D0BC2"

Have tried downloading Media ENcoder, -can't see how that works.

Any help please will be appreciated.

Win Media Player does not create file types. It is a media player.

0xC00D0BC2 is not a codec, it's a non specific error code.

Windows Movie maker is very fussy about what file types it
will allow and will work with, DV-AVI and WMV assured,
most Mpeg1 file types too. Nothing else!

The AVI you are trying to import is probably a DivX,
these are not compatible with WMM.
You will have to convert it to a WMV to be able to import
into WMM.
