I have been using Outlook Express 5 on my old Windows 98 Computer and now
have Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 on my new Windows Vista Computer

I have transferred the dbx files onto the new computer and they are sitting
on my desktop.

I want to import these but the 'import and export' command on the file menu
wont seem to pick these up (although it has successfully picked up addresses
I was transferring). The set up of this menu item does not seem to be the
same in my version of office outlook to that referred to on the various help
points on the web.

Can anyone help?

The problem is that there is no Outlook Express on your Vista machine and
Windows Mail doesn't know how to do anything with a .DBX file but import it.
The best way to handle this would probably be to import everything from your
OE .DBX files into Windows Mail, then use WM's export feature to transfer
everything into Outlook 2007.

Thank you.

I tried opening Windows Mail and importing as you suggested. However it
failed to pick up the files - I got a message saying 'No messages can be
found in the folder or another application is running which has the required
files open'

Nothing else is running which is remotely related (I have closed down my
outlook express) so I presume it just cant see the dbx files.

Incidentally Windows Mail import only gives me the options of importing from
Outlook expres 6 while I have Outlook Express 5. is this the problem perhaps?

When you try to import, navigate only to the folder containing the .DBX
files, don't open the folder. Complete instructions for moving data from
OE to Wm are here:

How do I back up my files and settings?

OE 5.x and 6.x use the same file structures, so selecting OE 6 is correct.
When you have everything transferred to WM, use it to export to Outlook; you
can use either the Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange export selection,
they both do the same thing.

Thank you very much. This helped me resolve it. First time around I had not
copied across folders.dbx, which the complete instructions pointed out was
necessary.
