I've been having trouble with importing a specific
sequence of filenames for jpgs, and then using Automovie
to put them in the correct sequential order. The sequence
is very important as that's how the story goes.

iow - Expected Behaviour after using Automovie

001.jpg
002.jpg
003.jpg

What I'm actually getting is...

097.jpg
103.jpg
008.jpg
128.jpg

[btw-the 3 digit file name sequence accounts for <= 999
files so it's not a numbering issue

TIA for sharing your knowledge with me and the group.

Hi there,

I am not certain of what you are saying...are you saying that they appear
in the correct order on the timeline but the resulting video has them in
the wrong order? or are you saying that when automovie puts them on the
timeline for you, that they are in the wrong order.

If its the later of the two options, I just did some tests with the winter
pack of still images. They were not in alphabetical order in the
collection, but they were when automovie placed them in the timeline. Which
is actually unfortunate as you may not want them to be ordered in that
way!!!

I saved the small automovie and it played the way it was shown in the
timeline.

Even though I cannot re-create the issue it does not make it any less
real... As you know you can in the collections panel select how they are
ordered by clicking on the title section above each column. If you order
them alphabetically and then making sure that you can see the top of the
list left click the first one and then scroll down to the last one and hold
down the shift key and then left click the last one, takes deep breath!!!,
then proceed by clicking on Automovie etc etc does it still come out wrong?

John;

Thanx for takin' the time to try and help me with this
issue. Sorry if I was unclear. Let me try to answer your
questions.

There are about 190 jpgs that I am trying to convert into
a "Music Video" style movie using an MP3 as the sound
track. XP Movie Maker Vers 2.033

"...are you saying that they appear in the correct order
on the timeline..?"

No, they appear very jumbled [on the timeline] with
absolutely no rhyme or reason as to how they were
selected by Automovie. iow File Name Sequence is...

abc123_098.jpg
abc123_066.jpg
abc123_003.jpg

Instead of the desired sequence of

abc123_001.jpg
abc123_002.jpg
abc123_003.jpg

[I first thought "abc123_" may have been an issue so I
tried renaming the files
to "001.jpg", "002.jpg", "003.jpg" but did not notice any
effect.

"As you know you can in the collections panel select how
they are ordered by clicking on the title section above
each column."

John, unclear with you on this point. My display is
800x600. In the default Collections panel I see
thumbnails of the jpgs 2 across, going down. They do
appear to be in the correct filename sequential order.

I do not however see the "title section above each
column." That you are referencing.

"If you order...list left click the first one and then
scroll down to the last one and hold down the shift key
and then left click the last one, takes deep breath!!!,
then proceed by clicking on Automovie etc etc does it
still come out wrong?"

Yes it still comes out wrong sequence.[sigh]

If this were a database, I would think I have a blown
index somewhere.

I have tried different types of movie styles, but they
all seem to have the same result. The automovie does seem
to be consistent in picking the exact same albiet the
wrong sequence everytime. I have triple checked the file
names but can see no errors there.

Thanx again for your kind assistance.

Hi there,

With regard to how you see a collection etc.

1) Click the button called Collection

2) Choose the collection you want to view, so that you can see a display of
the items in that collection

3) Above the preview window you will see a small icon of a window containing
some objects. If you allow the mouse to rest on it you will see the tool tip
"Views". Click the small down arrow and select "Detail"

4) Back with the collection Click the small header bar called "Name" once or
twice so that the result is that you can see your images arranged in
Alpha-Numeric order.

5) Left Click the top most image.

6) Being careful not to let the mouse wander over the list, use the scroll
button on the right hand side and scroll to the bottom of the list

7) Hold down the shift key and left click the bottom item once only

8) Put mouse over list , Press & hold down the right mouse key

9) Drag all of the items on to the timeline and release the mouse button
(The cursor changes to a "+" sign indicating where it is OK to drop the
items.

The above method bypass's the auto movie option all together. What it does
not do is overlap the images or provide a transition between the images.
This can also be fixed...

A) After step 5 above...drag that image to the timeline...it will become the
first image on the timeline.

B) Perform step 6 above

C) Select and drag the last image onto the timeline, giving you Image 001
and the last image side by side.

D) Look for the small Plus & Minus signs to the left of the time line. Click
the Plus sign until it becomes inactive. This opens up the time line to its
greatest resolution.

E) With the last Image. Place mouse over the image in the timeline and hold
down the left mouse button.

F) Drag the image sideways so that it overlaps the first image. Do not go to
far to the left. If you do the images will exchange places. What you are
achieving here is a transition from one image to the other. The amount of
time the transition takes is dictated by the amount of overlap.

H) Go to the transitions folder, Left click the transition of your choice
and drag and drop it onto the small transition bar just below the two images
in the timeline.

I) Go back to the list of images and scroll up to the top of the list.

J) Left click the SECOND image down

K) Scroll down to the bottom of the list.

L) Hold down the shift key and left click the last but one image

M) Depress and hold the right key over the images now selected

N) Drag the images down towards the time line and whilst still holding down
the right mouse key position the mouse over the transition we worked on
earlier

O) Release the mouse button and site back

It may take several seconds to complete. What you will end up with is all of
your images in alphabetical order, all of them overlapped the same amount
and all with the same transition effect. At this stage you can make changes
to the overall layout on a per image basis if you need/want to.

I am now going to take a lie down :)

P.S. If this does not work ... I have left the country, it was all a bad
dream, Who are you anyway ??? :)
