I'm trying to create an AVI slide show with JPG files taken with my digital camera. The files are located in my hard disk, all in the same folder. For some reason Movie Maker will not let me import some of them (about 75%), and gives me this response,

This file cannot be imported
Remote files using http, ftp, and other internet protocols cannot be imported
Please copy the files to your local disk to use with Windows Movie Maker....

Any help would be appreciated!!

Are you sure all of the files are stored in the folder properly? If you try
importing the files one at a time (any of the files which weren't imported
the first time) do you still get the same message? You can try using the
right-mouse button to click on one of the non-importable files and select
properties. Doing so should reveal if the file is an actual picture or a
link to a picture.

You may be selecting an improper file along with the JPG files. Try this
little trick:

When you open the window for importing image files, note the line-field to
the left of the IMPORT button. This is where any files you select will have
their names displayed after being selected. Use the left-mouse button to
click (once) in the Name line-field. If the line-field has any filenames
already listed, replace any / all text with the following:

*.JPG

Then press the keyboards "Enter" key, one time. This should help to ensure
only JPG files are listed for the selection process. At the moment I'm
being a bit paranoid by stating to avoid using the Ctrl+A key combination to
select all files. Instead, click on the first picture listed to highlight
it. Move the mouse pointer to the last file to be selected (scroll to the
right if necessary).

Press and hold down the keyboards Shift key and then use the left-mouse
button to click on the last JPG file. This should select all of the JPG
files. Then IMPORT.

If you still receive the error message, re-try but only select one column of
JPG pictures at a time. This will help to narrow down the possibilities as
to which file is causing the problem.

Hi there,

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that a camera or its
smart/media card can be thought of as being networked, in a sense they are.

Your best solution will be to use the software that comes with your
camera and store the files into a directory of your choice. Then use Movie
Maker to import those files. You should take note that the word "Import"
does not have the literal meaning...the files do not move from the location
you stored them, instead Movie Maker creates a small database that notes the
location/characterises of each image imported.

Hope this helps a little.

Tony - did you ever get an answer to your question regarding importing jpg
files. I looked at the one answer from wayne wilheim, but it does not help
me. I too, cannot import several files from my digital camers. I did get a
few in, but am not sure why some are imported and others are not.
Appreciate a response, if you have one.

John - all of the files from my camera are on my computer (I download and erase). I'm still not able to import (and I understand that it's just a pointer). I get the same error that was mentioned previously "This file cannot be imported. Remote files using http, ftp, and other internet protocols cannot be imported. Please copy the files to your local disk to use w/ MMM." All of the files I've tried to import are on my local disk in a shared directory. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help

Hi there,

Forgetting Movie Maker for a minute, if you open Windows Explorer,
navigate to the directory where these images are stored and double click one
of them, what happens? You should have the pictures open up either in
Windows Fax and image viewer or in some image editing package like Paint or
Coral or Adobe Photshop etc.

Once you have found these images in Windows Explorer, would you single
click the location (It will be in the address bar at the top of the screen)
then press Ctrl-A, release the keys and then press CTRL-C. When you have
done that reply to this message and in the body part of the message single
click and then press Ctrl-V What you should have copied and pasted to the
message is the fully qualified path to where these JPeg's are stored. I
think we need to see that before we can go any further.
