I have a text file I need to import into Access 2002. It is not delimited
however I know the char length for each field. Is there a way I can import
mutliple records into a table with predefined field sizes (e.g. Field 1 - 10
chars, Field 2 - 3 chars, Field 3 - 1 char etc up to 80 fields) so the
correct info drops into the correct slot.

I am not VBA literate

When you import stuff into Access, you go through a wizard which does all
this for you, what you are doing is importing a fixed width text file. Give
it a go.

Thanks - but I am aware of this wizard. I want to import multiple files all
with the same field structure. I wish to avoid having to define up to 80
fields each time I import which is why I asked about pre defining field
lengths.

kind regards

While you are using this wizard, click on "Advanced..." and you can save the
file specs and use it to import all the files.

Thanks, this is perfect. It's amazing what you can find behind an Advanced
button.

I worked on one spec at home last night and stored it in a test db1.mdb. Of
course now I want to take it into the office to apply it to the data there.
However I can't see where Access is storing it. Can you help track it down
or explain how I can transfer it to another mdb file please.

Open the destination dataase. Go to File|Get External Data|Import,
select the MDB file that contains the spec you want, and click the
Options button. This reveals among other things a checkbox for importing
import/export specifications.

Bloody marvellous, thank you
