We had to do a reboot on our hard drive today and someone
at our internet provider told my husband how to back up
my address book and other email files onto a CD disc. He
did this but now I can't import it again to Outlook
Express. The file extension was .pst. The error message
it gives me when I try to import is: "File access
denied. You do not have the permission required to
access the file". What does this mean and how can I open
my files of all my email addresses? Any help would be
very appreciated.

Hi Carol,

Can you ask your question in Outlook Express forum?

But try this first. Copy the backup file to your local hard drive from
the CD. Right click on the file and select Properties. Uncheck
Read-only and click OK. Now try to import again.

I looked for an Outlook Express Forum, couldn't find
where it was listed but I'm sure if it was a snake it
would've bit me, haha. Tried your suggestion, it didn't
work, the properties did not show that it was read-only.
Any other suggestions? Why would it tell me that I did
not have permission to access my own file?

Hi Carol,

The Outlook Express newsgroups are under the Internet Explorer hierarchy,
which is under the Windows hierarchy. There is a specific newsgroup for
each version. The newsgroup for Outlook Express 6 would be:
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress.

As you just reformatted your hard drive, is it possible that you exported
the file from Outlook Express 6, but are trying to import it into Outlook
Express 5.5? If so, updating Internet Explorer, which should also update
Outlook Express, may resolve the issue.

..pst is an Outlook file format, not an Outlook Express file format. The
only reason I can think of for advising this as a backup method is that an
Outlook .pst file contains contacts, email, and folders in one file, but
Outlook Express has a file for the address book, and separate files for each
email folder.

As for permissions issues, this can occur with Windows NT4/2000/XP when the
NTFS filesystem is used. This shouldn't be an issue in this case, as the CD
filesystem does not support ownership and permissions. The copied file
should acquire it's ownership from the person copying the file, and its
permissions from the folder to which it's copied. If you suspect this could
be an issue, open Help and Support, then search for "take ownership"

If you're unable to import it back into Outlook Express, but know someone
that has Outlook and a CD-R, it may be possible for them to import your .pst
file, then export it in a more compatible format.
