Transferring Favorites from old computer to new-- using wizard, I get the
message "You do not have permission to save in this directory. See the
administrator to obtain permission." then it says would you like to save to
a word file?
How do I get this permission changed?

Hi Happy :-)

Are you logged on as Administrator during this process? You might try the
following and see if it helps:

Favorites Cannot be Imported

Importation of Favorites simply doesn't work and never has since IE4.
Everybody has been forced to manually copy the individual files to the
appropriate folder. This is very rough on less adept users. The import
function should be smart about where all versions of Windows back to Win98
store their Favorites and bring them to the proper place without user input.
It should also be smart about not duplicating the Favorites that are
pre-installed.

Actually, the easiest and fastest way is to simply copy the Favorites folder
to a floppy disk, then copy the files from the folder to the Favorites
folder on the other computer. If the Favorites file is too big to put on a
floppy, then burn it to a CD and copy from there. I have done this with the
3 drives I have on my machine, with 3 different versions of Windows, and
I've never had a problem. My favorites all work just fine. I tried the
Import Wizard in XP and had no luck with it at all, so I did it the old
fashioned way and no worries.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

Jan, that sounds like a good idea. Exhibiting my ignorance, where is the
favorites folder to copy them to? I now have the favorites on a CD, read to
copy.

Well...I like to think if it more as merely 'a failure to communicate' twix
me and deh Wizzard. ;o)

Ok..here are the folder locations for XP:
Documents and settings
Administrator (or name) profile
Favorties (my folder has a Star by it, YMMV)
<User name> profile
Favorites (no star by this one on mine)

W2K:
Administrator (or name) profile
Favorties
<User name> profile
Favorites

Your folder structure may be a bit different, but, you can do a Search for
Favorites and then go from there if they are not in the same place as they
are here.

Hope this helps

By golly, Jan, that worked fine! Saved me a bunch of time trying to recreate
it, because even though I have the text files, it would still be quite a
process, as I have a lot, spelled l-o-t of favourites.
Thanks!

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you were able to get them transferred
over with no problems. Something to be said about the old fashioned way now
and then. ;o)

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem. :-)
