I have copied my .pst files to my Vista installation and I want to import
into the Vista Mail program. When I try, I get a "Message cannot by imported
from the MAPI client" error. I assume this means that I have to install
Outlook in order to input Outlook?

I would expect that Windows Mail, like Outlook Express, needs to use Outlook
to read the PST file.

I suspected as much, I'll post if that fixes it.

Well I tried that and Windows Mail still says

"Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI Client. MAPI is not installed
on this computer or an error occurred while installing it."

I'm running Vista 64 Bit and want to import my Outlook 2003 mail to Windows
Mail. Installed Outlook 2003 but MAPI error still occurs.

Suggestions?

Can you export them from Outlook to Outlook Express on the old setup? If
so, the Import from Outlook Express may also have problems, but you can work
around that by copying them a folder in Outlook Express as EML files to a
folder you create, then copy that folder to Vista and drag/drop them from
that folder into a mail folder in Windows Mail. There are many reported
problems with importing into the 64 bit builds but the drag/drop routine of
EML files works. Unfortunately, you cannot do it from Outlook since Outlook
saves the files as MSG files which are binary in nature and not readable as
EML which are basically Plain Text.

Thanks Jim,

I was able to import my PST file into Express and then in turn import the
Express DBX files into Windows Mail without any trouble.

Aside from having to jump through a couple of hoops to get my old Outlook
2003 mail, I give Windows Mail a solid thumbs up.

I am unable to delete the empty "Imported Folder" folder(s). I select them
for deletion, a pop-up box asks if I am sure, I select "Yes"...but they
remain.
