I jst cannot seem to get it done to import an excel contact list into
outlook (office 2003). Just for testing purposes (esp named range) I
created a small 2x2 excel fil containing a name and street, like
this":

John Lane1
Pete Lane 2

Now, I have experimented with creating named ranges:
I added a toprow containing the words "Name" and "Street" and used the
create names function. Alternatively, I selected each (2-row) column
and typed a name in the name field. tried several other things I
cannot remember. In all instances I could not perform an import in
outlooks contacts. In almost all cases I ended up with 4 new contacts:
John, Lane1, Pete and Lane2

In the mapping dialog I pointed John and Pete to first name and Lane1
and Lane2 to street under home address. Can Anyone help or point me
to a tutorioal or something?

The ***one*** named range for the import needs to cover both the column
headings and all the data rows.

I interpreted this as follows:
I have made a new 2x3 spreadsheet like this:
name street
John Lane1
Pete Lane 2

then, select all 6 cells, choose insert-->names-->create name--> from
row ! (I have dutch version so the wording might not be exact)
however, when I do this, 4 separate contacts are imported in outlook:
John, pete, Lane1 and Lane2.

I guess I misinterpret your solution, but what would be the right way?

During the import, make sure that you specify the named range that covers
all 6 cells and that you use the Map Fields button to tell Outlook to put
the names in the First Name field and the streets in the Street Address
field.
