Importing Fax Files from XP Backups

I have used the fax function in Windows XP for years. I routinely backup the
sent and received files. I would like to import these backed up files into
Vista Fax but cannot figure out where they should be copied. It appears it
should be c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WindowsNT\MSFax\Inbox or SentItems. I
have copied my old file to these folders, but they are not visible in Vista
Fax.

What am I doing wrong? What setting is not set? I can see the backed up .tif
files. They open in the viewer. The faxes I've sent and received in Vista Fax
are viewable in Vista Fax. HELP!!!

No. That's way too obvious. I'm used to having to make things visible, go
thru multiple nest, etc. ;) Will try that!!! Thanks!

OK. I have started to copy the files to the Documents\Fax folder. However,
there's only the folders for Drafts, Inbox, and Personal Pages. No Sent
folder. And I've tried sending and they end up in the MSFax area (see below).
If you open Vista Fax, go to Fax Settings\Advanced, there's a button to
change the archive folder location, which is c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows
NT\MSFax. That location has folders called ActivityLog, Common Coverpages,
Inbox, Queue, SentItems, VirtualInbox.

Aside from the \Fax folder having only [3] folders and the \MSFax folder
having [6] folders, I have copied some sample WinXP Fax documents to both the
\Fax\Inbox and \MSFax\Inbox and \MSFax\SentItems. None of the WinXP are shown
in Vista Fax.

I know there was a function in WinXP Fax that imported the files, not just
copy. I have a feeling that this is what is needed here. Straight copy just
doesn't seem to be working.

Am I wrong? Would be great. Thoughts?

Let me look into this. It takes some unhiding of files and special
permissions even to expose and access those folders. I assume you have done
that. Also what is your file association for TIF files?

Thanks for the note back. File association for .tif files is MS Office
Document Imaging. Found that in CP>Default Programs>Set Associations. The
faxes I do with Vista fax are viewable. The historical files from WinXP Fax,
just last week, are not.

Yep. Have unhidden files and folders. Have given myself every permissions I
can find. Because AutoCAD LT 2007 will not open/run with User Account Control
(UAC) running, I have UAC turned off.

Would it be helpful to attach a file from each Fax program? Is there some
extra "something" the Vista Fax files have that the WinXP files don't?

Lastly, seems like an import function is either missing or needed. Or I
can't find it if there is one. WinXP Fax has it. That's how I always put the
files back when I had to reformat and reinstall in WinXP.

THanks again for your help!!!

some time and bug it directly with the developers.

Reproduced here. The developers are aware of the issue. Here's the way
things work: If you do an in-place upgrade from Win XP to Vista, all your
faxes will be converted to a format which will be visible in Vista Fax. If
you do a clean install of Vista then manually move your faxes from XP into
Vista's Inbox and SentItems folders using Windows Explorer, they will not be
visible. You'll have to open those folders directly in Windows Explorer to
view those faxes.
Windows Easy Transfer doesn't seem to handle faxes either. They might
develop a power toy that will allows users to transfer faxes manually. We'll
have to wait and see.

You're the only one so far. Migrating old faxes isn't a frequent request,
but I suspect there will be a few who will miss it with the RTM if they do a
clean install.
Keep beating up on the fax program and post any other problems you
encounter. The developers are quite keen on making this the best fax module
ever, and so far I think they've succeeded.

faxes will be converted to a format which will be visible in Vista Fax.
If
you do a clean install of Vista then manually move your faxes from XP
into
Vista's Inbox and SentItems folders using Windows Explorer, they will not
be
visible. You'll have to open those folders directly in Windows Explorer
to
view those faxes.
Windows Easy Transfer doesn't seem to handle faxes either. They might
develop a power toy that will allows users to transfer faxes manually.
We'll
have to wait and see.

The method you are using is the correct one (and the only one). Why it
isn't
working with Vista I don't know. I'll see if I can reproduce it when I
have
some time and bug it directly with the developers.

[MVP-Outlook]
message Thanks for the note back. File association for .tif files is MS
Office
Document Imaging. Found that in CP>Default Programs>Set
Associations.
The
faxes I do with Vista fax are viewable. The historical files from
WinXP
Fax,
just last week, are not.

Yep. Have unhidden files and folders. Have given myself every
permissions
I
can find. Because AutoCAD LT 2007 will not open/run with User
Account
Control
(UAC) running, I have UAC turned off.

Would it be helpful to attach a file from each Fax program? Is there
some
extra "something" the Vista Fax files have that the WinXP files
don't?

Lastly, seems like an import function is either missing or needed.
Or I
can't find it if there is one. WinXP Fax has it. That's how I always
put
the
files back when I had to reformat and reinstall in WinXP.

THanks again for your help!!!

Let me look into this. It takes some unhiding of files and special
permissions even to expose and access those folders. I assume you
have
done
that. Also what is your file association for TIF files?

in
message OK. I have started to copy the files to the Documents\Fax folder.
However,
there's only the folders for Drafts, Inbox, and Personal Pages.
No
Sent
folder. And I've tried sending and they end up in the MSFax area
(see
below).
If you open Vista Fax, go to Fax Settings\Advanced, there's a
button
to
change the archive folder location, which is
c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows
NT\MSFax. That location has folders called ActivityLog, Common
Coverpages,
Inbox, Queue, SentItems, VirtualInbox.

Aside from the \Fax folder having only [3] folders and the \MSFax
folder
having [6] folders, I have copied some sample WinXP Fax documents
to
both
the
\Fax\Inbox and \MSFax\Inbox and \MSFax\SentItems. None of the
WinXP
are
shown
in Vista Fax.

I know there was a function in WinXP Fax that imported the files,
not
just
copy. I have a feeling that this is what is needed here. Straight
copy
just
doesn't seem to be working.

Am I wrong? Would be great. Thoughts?

:

I have used the fax function in Windows XP for years. I
routinely
backup
the
sent and received files. I would like to import these backed up
files
into
Vista Fax but cannot figure out where they should be copied. It
appears
it
should be c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WindowsNT\MSFax\Inbox or
SentItems.
I
have copied my old file to these folders, but they are not
visible
in
Vista
Fax.

What am I doing wrong? What setting is not set? I can see the
backed
up
.tif
files. They open in the viewer. The faxes I've sent and received
in
Vista
Fax
are viewable in Vista Fax. HELP!!!
