Importing Excel

I am trying to link or import an excel document from our server to an Access
2000 database. Whether selecting the file directly or using UNC, I get the
error "The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object......
Please make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path
name correctly.

It appears that whatever file name I try to select, it is adding a dollar
sign "$" to the filename just before the ".xls". Is there a way to correct
this?

Yes, I use File - External Data - Import to do this import, and when the file
location is selected and I check OK, the error message shows up suggesting
that the file name has a $ in it.

can you open it with Excel?

yes, the file opens fine with excel, it actually ties into MS Word for a mail
merge operation fine also. It is just when I try to link or import from
Access, it apparently adds that extra character to the filename, and then
Access can't locate it.
